Jake Bartlett (00:00): Hey, information technology'southward Jake Bartlett for school of motion. And in this tutorial, we're going to learn about art boards in illustrator and Photoshop. I'chiliad going to talk to you almost what art boards are and why you should be using them, how nosotros can work with them in both illustrator and Photoshop, as well as exporting multiple fine art boards from both pieces of software. Now I'm going to exist working with some project files a little flake later in this video. And if y'all desire to piece of work correct forth with me, then you tin download those project files for free right here at school of motion. Or yous can follow the link in the description of this video. And then go ahead and do that. And then you tin can work with me.
Music (00:35): [intro music]
Jake Bartlett (00:43): Now what are art boards? You lot tin can think of an art board in either of these programs equally the sheet that you're creating your artwork on. What's really prissy near them is that they allow you lot to have multiple canvases within a single document illustrator and Photoshop, both used to only allow you to have one canvass within a single document. So if you needed multiple frames to come out of the same certificate, you would basically have to layer things, turn them on and off and consign them. Information technology was a mess. Neither programme was always designed to handle multiple documents inside the aforementioned document. InDesign is the program that was really from multi-page documents and that'southward what it has always been. And it still is a really bang-up tool for that purpose, but that's much more for the print world, whereas in the MoGraph world, the reason you lot would want multiple frames within a single document is so that you lot could create artwork for multiple frames without having to create more projection files.
Jake Bartlett (01:39): Just think about designing boards for a sequence of blitheness. This manner y'all tin keep all of your assets that will eventually be in the terminal animation, all in the aforementioned document and just apply these fine art boards equally multiple frames for that sequence of animation. And that's exactly what I'm going to testify you how to do in this video. And then let's start with illustrator and take a wait. How art boards work in that program. All right, here I am an illustrator and we tin actually customize fine art boards right when we're making a new project. So I'1000 only going to click on the, create new button and have a look at the new document window. This, uh, panel right over hither is where we can make up one's mind the size of our frames or fine art boards, besides every bit how many art boards there will be when we offset the document.
Jake Bartlett (02:23): And then I'm just going to change this to the standard 1920 by 10 80 HD frame. And I'm going to say four fine art boards and all 4 of those art boards are going to take the same size. Uh, under our color way. Nosotros accept RGB PPI is 72 that's pixels per inch. That'southward how I want it all set. So now that that'southward already, I'grand going to click on create, and we're going to get this blank document that has those four art boards. Now I'one thousand going to get ahead and close up some of these actress panels, just so it's a trivial easier to work with, and you lot can see what's going on here as zoomed out a little bit. Then we tin can see all four of these art boards at once. And yous'll observe that illustrator them in this nice piffling grid for me. At present, similar I said, each one of these art boards is basically a canvas for multiple frames of any you'd like them to exist.
Jake Bartlett (03:08): So in the example of MoGraph once more, that would be a sequence of animation, or at to the lowest degree that's how I'm going to treat information technology. But this way I can accept four individual frames in the same document, and I can add together more than fine art boards at any time. So let's talk about how we can add together or remove fine art boards if we want to. Well, start of all, I have the properties console open. So if y'all don't have that come up to window backdrop, and that will give you lot this console, that updates with basically whatever tool you have, uh, agile or any y'all take selected giving you lot the most used controls, most useful controls for that selection, because I oasis't selected anything however. It'south given me options for my document. And it's telling me that I'm currently on art lath i, that'southward also what this number one down here is telling me.
Jake Bartlett (03:53): These are my individual art boards. As I click on each ane of these. It's very hard to see, but if you zoom in nice and close hither, you tin see that there's simply a thin black outline. As I click on each one of these art boards. If you pay attention to this number hither or this number here as they click through them, it's advancing through ane, 2, 3, 4. And so that'due south how you tin can know which art board you're actively working on underneath. That is a little edit fine art boards push. If I click on that, it'south going to get into the art board edit way and give me some more options. So again, my first art board is the one that is selected or agile. And I now have this bounding box around it that allows me to but freely resize this art board. Just similar if it were a shape, I can change this to whatever size I want and I tin come up up here and type in the width 1920 by x 80 over again.
Jake Bartlett (04:44): And it's dorsum to the right size, just information technology's kind of off. Information technology's no longer in this nice grid. Now I could just click and drag in the center hither and kind of just place this as close as I can, simply I'm never going to be able to get that perfectly aligned in that filigree. If I were to go up to view and and so downwardly to smart guides, the keyboard shortcut is control you for that. That'southward going to allow me to snap to other things in my document, so that volition help with the perfect alignment or if that wasn't so perfect. I could also get to rearrange all in my properties panel. It'south also up here in my fine art board options. So if I click on rearrange, all this allows me to change the layout of the grid. So the showtime selection is the layout, which is a form past row.
Jake Bartlett (05:25): So y'all tin see what the little icon information technology's telling u.s.a.. It's basically going to do 1, 2, iii, 4, depending on how many rows at that place are. You can change that and so that it starts hither with one goes down to 2, 3, 4, or you could simply go in a straight line from left to right, or from pinnacle to bottom, you can also opposite the layout social club. So at that place's lots of options up here for you to modify the organisation of your art boards, but I'one thousand going to exit it on the default and I'm going to leave the columns at ii that's the vertical alignment with only 4. It makes sense to do two columns and 2 rows. But if you were working on say 20 fine art boards, you might want to have more columns so that it doesn't take up so much real estate vertically in your document. Side by side up we have spacing, which is going to exist the spacing betwixt art boards.
Jake Bartlett (06:12): And then you can change this to whatever you desire by default. Information technology was non 200 pixels, but if we change information technology to 200, that'south going to give us more space. And then finally nosotros accept move artwork with fine art lath, which is checked. And that will brand more sense in just a little bit, but for now, I'm merely going to rearrange these art boards past clicking. Okay. And there we become. Now you can see that nosotros have 200 pixels between each art board and they're all perfectly aligned once again. Okay. Since I'm still on my art board tool, which is this icon right here, by the fashion, I'm yet seeing properties for my art boards up here and in the backdrop panel. Y'all'll notice that at that place'south a name section. So I could proper name this art board, something else by default, it's just fine art lath one. And we can encounter that reflected right hither, merely I could call this frame 1 click on the 2nd art board, call that frame two.
Jake Bartlett (07:02): And they're updating in this view as well. This is really helpful because in one case nosotros go to consign these frames, they're actually going to by default, take these art board names and put them into the file name. So keep that in listen, as you're creating art boards, if you want to go on things squeamish and organized to just proper noun and label all these art boards properly, y'all can as well see an entire list of your art boards if you open up the fine art boards console. And so come upwards to window and get to art boards. And here y'all'll see all of your art boards in a list, and we accept a lot of the aforementioned options. Then nosotros take the rearrange, all art boards. We can alter the order of the art boards just by clicking and dragging. And you discover that as I click on the art board, it zooms in to total frame on that art board, but I tin easily rename these last two frame three and frame four just by double clicking on them.
Jake Bartlett (07:54): Okay, now that those are renamed, I'chiliad going to zoom out one more time and allow's talk well-nigh how we can add together or remove more than art boards. So I'grand going to go dorsum to that art board tool. And showtime of all, you can duplicate an art board, but like any other object with the art lath tool selected. I'm going to hold down. Option are all done, a PC. Run across that we have our indistinguishable arrows testify up on my mouse pointer and I tin can click and drag and just have that duplicated. And then I tin do it again. I can practice this as many times as I want, and I can even select multiple fine art boards by holding down shift and then doing this. And then I want to rearrange all of these over again. So I'thousand going to put 100 pixels between each and I'k going to say three columns this time and then click on.
Jake Bartlett (08:34): Okay, then at present I take this nice 3 by 3 grid with nine frames, and I can at present rename each one of these. Notwithstanding I want, I could as well freehand draw an fine art board using the art lath tool, just like y'all would with a rectangle, but I've never really plant that to be useful considering yous tin can't exist very precise with it. And it's not very oftentimes that y'all don't need to be with the size of your canvas since that will exist what your final exports resolution will be. So I'1000 just going to disengage that and go dorsum to my grid. If I want to delete some art boards, I can select one of them and printing the delete key. That'll remove it. I tin also go into the art boards panel and click on the delete or trashcan icon. And that will get rid of an art board with the art board tool selected.
Jake Bartlett (09:xvi): I can click on the new fine art board button, and that will add a new one with the default spacing between art boards. So I might demand to just correct that, merely at present you can see how rapidly and easily you can rearrange these art boards, add together or delete more and get them working exactly the manner that you want them to. Now, I really quickly merely want to talk about the placement of fine art boards and how they work in the space of your document, as well equally how elements react to the fine art boards, depending on which 1 is active. If I go back to my selection tool, recollect if I just click on any one of these, you tin come across right here in the art boards console, it's going to make that one agile well with the art board tool selected. We have the width and elevation correct hither, just we too have an Ten and a Y position value.
Jake Bartlett (x:01): And that might not make sense considering generally the position value is based on the bounds of your canvas or the art board, right? If I were to make just a square real quick, and I zoom in here and click on that, nosotros're going to get position values in my property. Transformed controls right here are the Ten and Y. So if I wanted information technology in the centre of my document, I would say 9 60, which has one-half of 1920 by five 40, which is half of x 80 to requite me the very middle of that frame. But the art board itself has an 10 and Y position and that'south relative to the entire certificate. So if I zoom out really far here, yous can see that there'southward actually another premises to your document. This is the document bounds, and you literally cannot have anything exterior of this.
Jake Bartlett (10:47): And so if y'all're e'er working with a lot of art boards and you're really pushing to the edges of your document bounds, you're going to run the run a risk of crashing or even corrupting your file. And it won't really even permit you push stuff outside that boundary. And then at that point, you're probably going to want to make a separate file. I've never gotten to that point, but it's not something that's totally impossible. Sometimes sequences of animation take hundreds of frames. So you're not going to want to comprise all of that into one single document, just that is exactly why our fine art boards accept positioned values as well because it's positioned relative to the unabridged document. Now, another note nigh positioning, the bodily alignment controls. If you're not familiar with them, bear witness up here on the controls panel, uh, right hither control under window. If y'all don't see that console, these alignment controls permit you lot to marshal multiple objects to each other too every bit to the fine art lath.
Jake Bartlett (11:42): So if I wanted this again centered without typing in those numbers, I could just select my object, click on this button right here and make certain aligned to art lath is checked and then horizontally align the heart and then vertically align the middle. And in that location we get. Information technology's centered in my art lath, simply what if I want it centered on this fine art board over hither? Well, illustrator is paying attending to whichever art lath is agile. So if I were to click on this fine art board, it makes information technology active. You lot tin can meet again that tiny little black outline, only if I click on this object, because it's within this art lath, it reactivates the start fine art lath. So beginning things beginning I have to move this object over to the second fine art board. Then click on that art board, click on the object again, and and so horizontally and vertically align that object to the eye.
Jake Bartlett (12:31): And if you're familiar with rulers and guides, those also vest to specific art boards. So again, if I go to say this ane right hither and I press command or control are on a PC to bring up my rulers, you run into that zilch aught is in the peak left corner of that art board. And if I movement over to this one correct hither, cipher zero is now in the top left corner of this fine art lath. It's whichever one I click on to make active. Then be aware of that when you're working with multiple fine art boards, all right, at present, I'thou going to open up those project files. I told you lot about before. If you want to follow forth with me, go alee and open those upward. And here we have a sequence of iv frames. And then we've got the beginning frame with a manus coming in to come across a loving cup of coffee.
Jake Bartlett (xiii:16): It picks it up ever and then delicately, smears information technology off screen, pulls information technology off existent fast. And and then we're left with an empty desk. While these four frames might not be a finished sequence by any means, they are a good example of how y'all might work with multiple art boards within 1 certificate in illustrator. And it allows you to convey move across these multiple frames. And you'll observe that considering there's so much artwork from these avails hanging off of the edges of these art boards. I gave a lot of space between each one of these fine art boards. Again, just set up that spacing up. When you lot go to rearrange all your art boards, change the spacing to something really big so that you lot have plenty of room outside each art lath, and you don't have artwork overlapping multiple art boards. Now I want to go back to that fine art board tool and find this push button right here, which is move slash copy artwork with art board.
Jake Bartlett (14:06): I have it enabled right now. And what that'southward going to do is take whatever artwork is associated with that fine art board and movement it whenever you move the art lath. So if I were to click and drag this, you lot see that everything within that art board is moving with it. And the reason that this entire clock is moving with it is because it is a group of objects. So if I were to ungroup this command to shift G now all of these objects are loose. And I switched back to my fine art bar tool and click and drag. Again, anything that was entirely outside of the fine art board did non motility with it. Run across these numbers right here are partially within information technology. And then they moved, simply these ones did non because they were never in the artwork. Then that's why I grouped those objects just in case I needed to motility the art board effectually and this the same for when you're rearranging art board.
Jake Bartlett (14:53): So if I click on this again, click on rearrange. All that move artwork with art board is checked and then that I tin say put in 800 pixels of spacing, leave information technology at two columns and click, okay. And everything that's independent within each one of these art boards is now spaced out properly. At present I could probably plough that down to peradventure 600 pixels and notwithstanding go away with it just fine. Just if I were to have that unchecked, and so I motility this fine art lath, yous can run into that information technology is not moving the artwork at all, which you very well may want sometimes. So just be aware of that option. I'm going to undo to go that dorsum where it was. And now permit'south talk about how to export your art boards. At present, call up I told yous that naming these fine art boards is important considering that goes along with the file name when nosotros export them.
Jake Bartlett (15:39):
So I just named these frame ane, 2, iii, and four to export them. I'm just going to come to file export export for screens. And I know that sounds a trivial flake funny because export for screens, what does that hateful? Well, information technology'southward because you can actually export art boards in multiple resolutions and even multiple formats. Simply again, in the case of MoGraph, we just want ane format, ane resolution. So the iv screens part doesn't really utilize to us, but regardless, this is how we're going to consign our art board. Then nosotros have all four of our frames showing upwards as thumbnails here. Yous can see that information technology's cropped to the fine art board. And then nothing outside of them is showing up as well every bit the art board names, right underneath those thumbnails, which by the way, if you lot double click on whatsoever 1 of them, yous can rename them here.
Jake Bartlett (16:23): So if you didn't do it before, you can actually practise it here. And those names volition update in your art boards console after you've exported. And yous'll also notice that each 1 of these has a cheque mark on information technology. That means these are all going to be exported. If yous only needed to export frame three, then you could uncheck one, two and four. And it's only going to export frame iv. If I desire to re select all of them quickly, I can just come over to the select expanse and click on all. Or if you wanted to put all of them in the same document, y'all could click on full certificate, just be enlightened that is not going to crop to your art board. So anything outside of those frames you were going to encounter. I don't want that. I desire individual frames for each fine art board.
Jake Bartlett (17:01): So I'm going to get out all selected so move on down hither under export ii. This is where you're going to choose where these frames will export. I'm going to put them on the desktop. Yous tin accept it open the location afterwards y'all consign. If you'd similar, I don't need create sub folders check because as you can see in the tool tip, that is four scales. Basically, like I said, you tin can export multiple resolutions that would dissever up each frame into a folder based on its resolution or its scale. We want ane fourth dimension scale, 100, which is 100% resolution. And we don't need to add whatsoever more. So we don't need those sub folders. At present y'all could add a suffix, which equally I highlight over this, you tin can see this text down here, pop up to requite you a preview of what that would look similar.
Jake Bartlett (17:44): And that'll only add together the suffix into the file name right after the art boards name. Information technology can as well have a prefix, which in this case I actually practice want to add. So I'm going to type in coffee interruption and and then a hyphen. And that way it'south going to put coffee break dash frame i nuance frame ii, all the way down the line under the format, you tin can choose whatever y'all'd like for this artwork. I think P and G is probably going to be a adept pick considering it'southward all vector. Information technology's all apartment. In that location'south not texture. And that'll requite me low file size with loftier quality. But if you need to export as a JPEG, I would recommend doing JPEG 100. These numbers correspond the compression level. So if we leave it at 100, information technology's going to basically have no compression or the to the lowest degree amount of compression.
Jake Bartlett (xviii:28): All JPEGs are compressed, only information technology'll requite you lot 100% quality. I wouldn't exercise anything less than that. Uh, merely in this case, I'm going to leave it as a PNG. And then all nosotros have to do is say export art board. So I'm going to click on that. It'll export all four because they had that checkbox checked. It opened up the finder for me. And here we become, coffee break frame 1, two, three, and four, just like that. I was able to consign all iv full resolution frames all from the same document all at one time. And that'due south information technology. It's actually pretty piece of cake to work with art boards inside of illustrator one time you know where the tools are and how they behave and exporting them is a breeze compared to opening multiple documents and exporting each one, one at a time. So now that nosotros learned how to practice this in illustrator, let's take a look at Photoshop and how it handles art boards just slightly differently, merely it'south even so really useful.
Jake Bartlett (xix:18): Okay. So here in Photoshop, I'm going to click on create new, simply similar we did in illustrator. And this whole setup is very similar. I take my width and height to 1920 past x 80, then my resolution 72 PPI RGB color. That's all bang-up. But right here, this art boards checkbox, this is the kickoff difference between Photoshop and illustrator. Instead of being able to choose how many art boards my document has. I only have the pick to utilise art boards. And this is actually something you can modify once y'all're in the document. There'due south no requirement for yous to check this box now, but since we're going to be using fine art boards, I'm going to become ahead and check it. I only can't add any more. It's going to exist one single art lath. And then I'll go ahead and click on create. And there'due south my art lath.
Jake Bartlett (19:57): And even says right up here in the peak left corner, fine art board one, and y'all can see that the art board icon, the fine art lath tool icon is the aforementioned as it is an illustrator. You can notice it underneath the move tool. And this gives me similar options up here in the control panel, like the width and the height, for whatever reason. I don't know why, but Photoshop seems a trivial flake buggy with getting this width and peak backwards when y'all create a certificate. Merely if I select the fine art lath and we have a look at the backdrop console, yous tin run across that the width and acme are right. And so for whatever reason, it shows up correctly in the properties panel. Once again, if you don't have this open come to window properties, just like we did an illustrator, okay. Now I desire to take a look at the layers panel and signal out that Photoshop is handling this a little flake differently than illustrator.
Jake Bartlett (20:44): We see the art lath show up almost a group, and you see that I tin can collapse and expand that. And within the art board are the layers. Whereas in illustrator, they didn't prove up in the layers panel at all. They're not a layer level item inside of Photoshop. Y'all tin basically think of them like groups, only within that fine art board, you lot can have groups. Then I could press command G and group this layer within that group. It's just another level of group basically. And it creates this art board or sheet within my certificate. Again, if I zoom out really far, we can see that there is a document and then my art board within it. Now we don't run into a document bounds like we did an illustrator, only it is there over again. You don't want to work with a hundred frames, probably in one single Photoshop certificate that would just make a massive file and requite y'all much more potential for crashing your machine.
Jake Bartlett (21:39): Now, another deviation with art boards in Photoshop is to be able to alter the name. All I take to do is go to the layers panel. Double-click on it and type in a different name, just like any other layer. And that will update this right hither. I tin't, double-click on this. I can't use the art board tool to observe that proper noun in any of the properties anywhere else. That is how you rename an art lath. And that is very important to know, considering for whatever reason, within of Photoshop, you cannot change the name of your fine art boards. When you get to export them, you accept to practice that at this layer panel level. So that'due south a big difference between these ii programs and the manner they handle art boards. Another difference is the way that you add new art boards. And so with the fine art lath tool selected, I can click on this, add new fine art lath push, and that will allow me to click and information technology volition add together a new art board wherever I clicked.
Jake Bartlett (22:28): At present, this actually made that vertical 1920 past 10 80 frames. And then that actually explains why this was displaying 10 80 by 1920. It wasn't actually giving me the properties of the selected art board. It was giving me whatsoever the adjacent art board I creates dimensions would be. At present I want to bandy these two, but I want to do it in a quicker way than just deleting this one and making a new i. So to do that, I'g going to select that art board get to the art board tool. And then right here, we have make mural. If I click on that, you see that information technology swaps the two dimensions and I can go to portrait landscape simply like that. Okay. I tin can also motion this art board effectually, but not by clicking and dragging in the middle. If I click on this then take hold of the art board's name, then I tin can move this effectually.
Jake Bartlett (23:fourteen): And I have snapping enabled under view here, which is why I'grand getting all this snapping around, just to move it effectually, you just utilize the art board tool, or even just the move tool to click and drag on the art boards proper name. Now, another affair you probably noticed are these plus icons around each one of these art boards, these allow you to very quickly add another art board just by clicking on that plus, and information technology's going to add the same corporeality of spacing betwixt each new board. Now, this one didn't take the default spacing away from this one, which is why these four aren't aligned because I manually made that fine art board with the art lath tool simply by clicking. Unfortunately there is no suit fine art boards tool inside of Photoshop, the way that it is an illustrator. So I'm kind of just going to accept to do this by manus, just that is a very quick fashion of being able to add another art board simply by clicking a, those picayune plus icons.
Jake Bartlett (24:06): And every bit I'k doing that, you run across in the layers panel, I take all of these art boards showing upwardly one way that Photoshop handles the art board similarly to illustrator is its position relative to the documents. And then again, if I were to click on the showtime art lath in wait at the properties console, we have the 1920 by 10 80 width and tiptop, merely we too have the X and Y position within the document. So if I say nix by zero, that's going to give a very practiced starting point for that first board. And then we can motion onto the second ane and see that it's 2028 pixels to the right of the origin of my document and and so so on and then forth. And then that is one way that it behaves very similarly to illustrator another feature in Photoshop that we didn't accept an illustrator is the ability to alter how the art board's groundwork is displaying.
Jake Bartlett (24:51): So correct now they all have white backgrounds, but I could alter the background color with one of them selected. I could change the background color from white to black transparent. So I see the transparency grid or to a custom colour, and then I could make it a stake red color if I want information technology to. And as you can see, that is an option for each ane of these art boards. But be aware that that is not actually part of your artwork. It'south just a display preference within Photoshop. And so if I were to export this frame, I'm not going to have a crimson background. It's actually going to be transparent. Whatever color you see in here as the background color is transparency. So typically I like to work with all of my art boards set to existence transparent. So I'm simply going to practise that quick, selecting all of them by shift clicking, and so changing them to transparent.
Jake Bartlett (25:36): All right, I'thou going to become ahead and open up the PSD version of our coffee suspension artwork. So get ahead and open up that if you desire to follow along and you'll detect these are all in a horizontal row. And now, like I said, Photoshop doesn't have that rearrange art boards tool that illustrator does. So at that place'due south no easy way to simply change all of these into a ii column layout. So information technology's actually important that you pay attention to how you're laying out your art boards in Photoshop, since it's then hard and difficult to really rearrange them with that said, I want to rearrange this into the two by two grid. So I'm just going to click and drag on this art board and move information technology downwardly here. And Photoshop is kind of going to guide me to getting these spaced out properly, catch frame four and move it here.
Jake Bartlett (26:14): And in that location we become. Now we've got our two by two grid and you'll notice all the contents of each one of those art boards that moved with information technology. That is the default behavior in Photoshop. But if I were to go to my art board tool and have a await at this picayune settings icon, I want to betoken out something that's actually really convenient inside of Photoshop. And that's this keep a relative position during layer reordering checkbox. I have information technology checked. And so let's accept an object from the first frame. That's not in the fourth. So this coffee cup correct here, at least this part of it, and really I'll grab the group that has the unabridged java cup in it. So I'one thousand just going to rename this actually quick java mug. And I'm going to click and elevate that from frame one, that art board to frame iv, and simply let go.
Jake Bartlett (27:01): And you lot'll see that non only has it transferred the group into the fine art board in the layers, it kept the relative position. When I reordered that layers. That's what that checkbox is for nether that little settings icon, keep relative position during layer reordering. If I were to accept that unchecked and I practice the same matter, I grabbed that coffee mug and I move information technology to frame one, nothing happens. Information technology'south actually non letting me do that because you tin't really take artwork outside the bounds of an art board in Photoshop. At least not the aforementioned style that you can in illustrator. Like right hither, you lot'll notice that the bounding box of his paw, which the hand ends rate here is going beyond the art lath and actually spilling into frame two. But Photoshop is not allowing that object to display on frame two because of the structuring of art boards and Photoshop and how they're different from illustrator.
Jake Bartlett (27:50): Everything is going to be contained within that art lath. That's just how Photoshop behaves. So if I want to become this coffee mug back, I have to make certain that that setting is checked. Keep relative position during the layer reordering. And then I tin click and drag that coffee mug dorsum into frame 1. And it's going to keep the relative position to that art board. Now, I know I just told you that you can't really have artwork outside the bounds of the fine art lath, but that'southward not entirely true. If I were to grab this coffee mug and make sure that I have motorcar select group checked, and so I tin move this coffee mug out hither and information technology's going to brandish. Information technology'due south actually pulled information technology outside of all of my art boards and it's there, merely it'southward never going to consign information technology. And it looks really weird because information technology'south non within an art board anymore.
Jake Bartlett (28:34): If I drag information technology back into that frame, it'due south going to expect correct and it's going to put information technology dorsum into that frame. I's art board. Let me undo that. And so it's backwards supposed to be, but allow's say that I just desire to have this java mug and motility it into this frame. Well, if I do that, it'south really going to only transfer it over to the second frames art boards. So there we go. We have a java mug group inside in that location, just that only happened considering I had another selection selected under my fine art board tool settings. And that is machine nest layers. If I uncheck that, go back to my move tool and endeavor and move this back to this art lath. It disappears. Information technology's really there, it'due south over there, simply it'due south still contained within that second fine art lath, which is why it's not displaying on frame one.
Jake Bartlett (29:14): So you demand to make sure that you lot have that setting of auto nest layers enabled before yous motion objects around betwixt frames like that. And this goes the same for duplicating groups. And so if I were to hold downwards selection or all to click and elevate, information technology'southward going to transfer that duplicate into whatsoever fine art board I end upwards letting get of the mouse on. Now, the alignment controls, which are showing up right up here do answer to the fine art boards, just similar they do in illustrator. So if I aligned to the vertical center, the horizontal center or the top bottom edges, all of that responds to whatever art board information technology'due south office of. Okay, I'yard going to go alee and get rid of that coffee mug. And ane last thing I desire to point out is a little bug that I noticed when working with things similar gradients.
Jake Bartlett (29:56): And so if I were to make a new art board, so I'll just get to my fine art board tool and add some other one here and another one up hither, and then I want to add a gradient fill on one of these. I'm going to come to my new button downwards here and say gradient, and I'll cull some crazy colors. Uh, so I'll alter this to perhaps this colour right here and then change this to hither. And we've got this colored gradient I'll click. Okay. And you'll observe that I don't meet the unabridged gradient, this color that I chose, this pinkish color is not at the bottom of the, the art board. Fifty-fifty though I have a line with a layer checked, it'south not displaying the entire gradient. If I modify this bending from 90 to null, same matter happens. The pink side of this gradient is not being displayed for whatever reason.
Jake Bartlett (thirty:43): Let me click, okay. And talk about what's going on here. When you're working with things similar gradients, it'due south actually looking at the entire range of art boards inside your document to marshal that gradient to. So since this is a horizontal gradient, it's taking that starting time color stop of the pink and pushing it all the way over hither. Even though I tin can't see that within this art board, information technology's a very strange bug, but really the only way to get around this is to right click on the layer and convert it to a smart object. And once I do that, you can see what the actual bounding box of that gradient is. If I double click into that smart object, it's going to open that smart object and bear witness me the entire canvas. Now I don't actually want it this large. So I'm going to alter the canvas size by going up to paradigm, sheet size and typing in 1920 by 10 eighty pressing.
Jake Bartlett (31:34): Okay, it's going to tell me that it'south going to clip the sheet, but that'southward okay. I'll click on proceed. And now that slope is respecting the document residuum because this smart objects certificate bounds are 1920 by 10 80. At that place are no other art boards. And so it can't be any bigger than that. I'll salve this smart object, shut information technology out. And now that is displaying properly, just it's non where I wanted it. So I just got to click and elevate to get that position where it should be, make sure that information technology'southward aligned perfectly horizontally and vertically to the center of that art board. And at present I have that gradient background. So just one piffling bug that I noticed, very strange, just that's how you go effectually it. Okay. Now let's talk about how to consign the art boards from Photoshop. I'm just going to go rid of those last 2 that I just made really rapidly.
Jake Bartlett (32:19): And this is a very similar process to illustrator. Over again, the naming of the bodily art boards in your layers panel is what will be the file name for each frame when yous export it. So be aware of that, then come up to file export then export ads. This brings up a panel that's very similar to the consign for screens inside of illustrator. It allows you to customize the file format, the actual image size. You lot can base it on a scale cistron and you lot tin can even change the canvas size. I want to leave that as the same size equally the frame, so we don't accept any margin around information technology. And over here, nosotros do have that same ability to consign multiple versions of the aforementioned artwork. Again, nosotros don't need to do that. So I'one thousand just going to leave it at one times the scale, we don't need the suffix, but unfortunately nosotros cannot add a prefix in this panel.
Jake Bartlett (33:08): So if you needed to add in coffee, intermission hyphen, then frame 1, ii, iii, 4, you're either going to have to do it after you export or within the fine art board itself. As well be enlightened if you want to change whatsoever of these properties for all frames, you need to select all of them by clicking, holding shift, and so clicking on another one and then that you're editing all of them at in one case. But to export them all, y'all don't accept to have them all selected. You just come up downward here and click on the export all button. Information technology'southward going to enquire you where y'all want to put it. I'm going to leave it on my desktop and click on open up Photoshop. Nosotros'll export those frames, and then we tin can find them a charge per unit on the desktop. Then here's my frame. 1, 2, 3, and four exported. Just the aforementioned as illustrator. All correct.
Jake Bartlett (33:50): So that'south how you piece of work with art boards in both illustrator and Photoshop. And hopefully you tin see why they're such a useful tool for your workflow when it comes to motion design frames. At present, if you'd like to larn fifty-fifty more about Photoshop and illustrator, I have a grade on school of motion called Photoshop and illustrator unleashed, where I dive deep into both programs for the complete beginner or for the experienced MoGraph creative person, who simply, possibly isn't using the full potential of those two programs. You tin can learn all nigh it on the courses page at school of movement. I hope y'all got something out of this tutorial. And I also promise to see yous sometime in Photoshop and illustrator unleashed. Thank you for watching.
